Our Story

Your one stop shop for all your favourite local brands from all over Canada & North America; featuring bath & body, apparel and giftware from some of the best brands (and some that are up and coming too!). We pride ourselves on being able to offer the community an option of supporting other local families by shopping from over 250+ local brands - it's like a market that never closes!

The Local Space Fam

Owned by Megan and her husband, Matt Nakazawa (who you probably see around the shop on weekends fixing shit) and Bubba - he’s the real boss.

Thank you to all the local lovers out there for supporting us throughout the years. When you shop at The Local Space you aren’t just supporting my family but you are also supporting the families of all of our awesome employees, and the 150+ local vendors that retail their products in our shops.

2017

Friends Megan and Kristy (from Kristy Powers Photography) opened a
photography studio and marketing office in March of 2017.
Stocking just a few retail items at first, the requests
for more local goods grew and grew.

The Local Space became more about being a retail destination
or local product, and less about being the “space” it was originally
thought to be, and Megan took over full operations in the fall of that same year.

Funny how starting a business goes, right?
Don’t worry, they are still close friends! When Megan
got married, Kristy was there snapping all the IG-worthy photos!

2018

We were soon outgrowing our original ME Plaza
location, and in December of 2018 we settled into
our new home and current space just a few blocks
over, in historic downtown Langley’s one-way
section of Fraser Highway.

2019

Opening a location in her hometown was always
a dream of Megan's, and in early 2019, the
opportunity presented itself, as Chilliwack’s
downtown core underwent major changes. The
lease was signed, and we started getting ready to
open our second location, but...

2020

It’s no surprise 2020 was a crazy year for The Local
Space. Like many other businesses, we shut our
doors, and became an online-only business for
several months. The push to support local small
business was huge, and y’all showed the fuck up for
us in ways we cannot begin to thank you for.

When Megan signed the lease on her dream of
opening a shop in her hometown, doing it in the
middle of a pandemic was not part of the plan.
Despite the rocky times, with your support, we were
able to open our doors in Chilliwack’s newly refreshed
downtown area, District 1881 in October 2020.

2021 - Present

The past couple years we've spent planning how to be more
involved in our communities and educating our team.
We're returning to our small business community roots and
creating a space for small local businesses, launching our
online marketplace, and some other (TBA) exciting opportunities
for small Canadian businesses that will be coming soon!
